5 December 2004 - Report

On Sunday 5 December 2004 a gathering of 70 Patricians attended St Patrick's Cathedral to celebrate a Mass of Remembrance for those who have died in the last 12 months and to acknowledge the 150th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of St Patrick's College.

Seven Old Boy priests concelebrated, including chief celebrant Fr Jo Dirks SSS and Fr Gerry Healy SJ who delivered the homily. Fr Healy spoke about the circumstances in which the stone was laid. The government had offered a grant of land to each of the 4 main religious denominations if they would set up a school and Bishop Gould received 2 acres next to the cathedral. The Eureka Stockade had occurred on Sunday 3 December 1854 and some of the participants were present on the Tuesday for the laying of the foundation stone. Peter Lalor was present and subsequently found an accommodation with the authorities and went on to become a member of parliament, He also sent his two sons to St Pats.
