Good evening distinguished guests, Jesuits, Ladies and Gentlemen of St.

Patrick’s College. On behalf of Xavier College I wish to extend the apologies of our Rector, Father Chris Middleton and Principal, Mr William Doherty, who cannot be with us tonight.

I wish to thank Mr Murray Cullinan, SPOCA President and Mr Jim Smith, Past President for the invitation to speak to you tonight.

When I mentioned to a fellow archivist that I was speaking, he jokingly
